Hon’ble Supreme Court of India is considering a Public Interest Litigation W.P.13029/1985 regarding air pollution in 16 cities in India. Mumbai, Solapur and Pune cities in Maharashtra have been included for the preparation of the action plans for the control of air pollution for these cities which inter-alia should include the pollution reduction strategies. Mumbai High Court is already seized with the matter regarding air pollution control in Mumbai as per action plan prepared by the State Government.

MPCB has prepared Action Plans for control of air pollution in Pune and Solapur cities and submitted to Environmental Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) set up by Supreme Court and chaired by Shri Bhurelal. Based on the review of the implementation of the above action plans, taken by the Bhurelal Authority on January 8, 2005 and January 9, 2005 at Pune and Solapur, respectively, a series of directions have been issued by MPCB to various authorities, who are responsible for the implementation of action plans to control the air pollution in these cities .
